Not illustrated. 1896 Excerpt: ...adeno-carcinoma of the ovaries where, on using the special staining methods of Sanfelice, be was able to recognize large numbers of bodies similar to Sanfelice's blastomycetes, but no mention is made of any cultures or inoculation experiments. Finally Curtis has attempted to prove that blastomycetes were the cause of myxomatous tumors occurring in a man. Besides these five cases, including the present one, which have now been reported as producing pathogenic lesions in man, a large number of experiments have been carried out with various species of yeast fungi, particularly by Lydia Rabinowitch. This investigator experimented with fifty species of yeast fungi (blastomyces), and seven species were found to exercise a pathogenic effect in animals. It is especially interesting that they were all harmless for guinea-pigs, but pathogenic for mice and sometimes for rabbits. Her conclusions are that the parasites do not work through intoxication, but through infection, by which they are multiplied richly in the body itself. She also concludes that it is an easy matter to recognize the yeast cells in fresh preparations and that this mode of examination is to be preferred. It is extremely interesting that so soon after the publication of our preliminary report, the authors just referred to should have demonstrated so conclusively the existence of a yeast species which can produce pathological lesions in man and animals. With the exception of the part dealing with the skin lesions, Busse's article is complete in every detail. It is extremely unfortunate that a scantiness of material did not admit of a more extensive investigation in the present case. The organism concerned, although doubtless also a blastomyces, differed in several respects from that of Busse's case....
